Chicago has its own slogan that comes from a song. "City of big shoulders" or in a free translation A city with broad shoulders. He wrote the song in 1914 Carl Sandberg, and of course it is an association with Chicago as a city of workers, tractor-trailers who work on railway construction, as butchers and in heavy industry. That nickname is not easy, especially since the story of crime was grafted on later.
There was Torzo cafe in Podgorica. A parallel can be drawn with the nicknames of cities. In Torzo sat a team that justified the very name of that famous cafe. At the other end of Ulica Sloboda, there was the Korzo tavern, and the situation there was significantly different. That one letter made all the difference. Because everyone could sit in Corso, and not everyone could sit in Torso. It is possible that it was the shoulders that made the decision.
There are Berlin, Munich, San Francisco and New York cafes in Podgorica, but none of those names correspond to Podgorica. Neither Plan B, Mona Lisa, Sachi, nor Hemera can do that. We are waiting for a new point, we are waiting for a new nickname, but we cannot force it. Cosmopolitanism cannot be bought, because a nickname is born, it lives on its own. You never know where it will end up, from the name of the coffee shop or, as in the case of New York, that the column gave birth to its nickname.
What is important is that the city of New York knew how to use that nickname, to become a "virgin" through apple advertising, to be recognized by the apple. The apple started from Eve, reached the nickname of New York, and ended up as the logo of the Apple company. With the slogan "Think different", the apple is today a world symbol of innovation, an association with perhaps the world's biggest brand and one of the most modern cities in the world.
Maybe you can earn more in Dubai, but many young people from Montenegro went to New York to seek happiness. Because of New York, which has become a brand! When you ask them how it is going, they answer that they are "getting along". They neither say that they are well nor that they are bad. It works, so they say. Everyone starts moving, waiting to move on to some better paying and easier jobs. Our guys with broad shoulders carry armchairs, wardrobes and couches up the narrow staircase. Like in one episode Friends were carrying a sofa and broke it. Our people send photos to relatives via Viber and sometimes send money via money transfer companies. They are shaking. Kudos to them. Every dollar they earn, they know how they earned it, with how much effort.
The symbols of today's New York are Todd Phillips, Spike Lee, Woody Allen and of course Fran Libovic. A documentary that is Martin Scorsese recorded with Fran Libovic is a tribute to New York. As she walks through the city, she feels a mixture of contempt and admiration for the Big Apple. But Fran Libovic knows how to walk in that city. Our people who do removals know it too, they probably know every corner and every attic of that city. They know every step.
New York is not won by someone running in front of you and filming you walking in a dark suit with dark glasses towards the United Nations headquarters. It's all a pose, an imitation of the attitude from Man in black movie. Dritan maybe he knows where he's headed, but those around him seem to have come to save their wages, as if they came more for Instagram than for New York. Because if it were otherwise, they would walk casually, just like Fran Libovic.
The band Who Is The Best has a line that is a great tribute to New Yorker Spike Lee and his movie "Do the right thing". In the song Ordinary Day, they say "Because I only do the right things like Spike".
If one, two or fifteen delegations from Montenegro went to New York, I guess they went for a reason. That's why while they're there they should do the right things, and when they come back, they can throw around Podgorica with suits and glasses, spread out and walk with their noses up and when someone asks them what they're doing, they can freely say: "Here I am from New York" . For some, the Big Apple is still too big a bite.
