Prof. Dr. Cane Tulić is a professor of Surgery with Anesthesiology (Urology) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. Rich experience and expertise gained through decades of work in leading positions in the Institute of Urology and Nephrology of the Clinical Center of Serbia, prof. Dr. Tulić has been applying it in the clinic for 12 years Primus Medical in Podgorica, where he performs urological examinations with complete ultrasound diagnostics.

What are the symptoms for which patients come to you most often?

"The most common reasons why patients turn to a urologist are urinary tract infections, frequent urination, incontinence, pain or the appearance of blood during urination, kidney stones, sexual dysfunction, pain in the genital or lumbar region, and similar complaints.

Urinary tract infections are the most common of all bacterial infections in women. In most cases, the causative agent is Escherichia coli - a natural inhabitant of our intestines, which, due to the female anatomy, easily enters the urinary tract and causes infection.

In men, bacterial prostatitis and benign prostatic enlargement are common problems. Prostate cancer is the second most common malignant tumor in men in Montenegro. In order to detect this disease at an early stage and effectively treat it, all men over the age of 45 are recommended to undergo a preventive examination by a urologist once a year." - points out prof. Dr. Tulić

What does an examination at a urologist look like?

"The examination begins with a conversation with the patient, during which we ask targeted questions, in order to get as much information as possible about the beginning, course and cause of your problems. Then we perform the clinical part of the examination, and in order to make this examination more precise, an ultrasound examination is also performed. Based on this, we get a complete picture, make a diagnosis and discuss the results with the patient. If any abnormalities are found, we suggest an individualized treatment plan or additional tests, if necessary.

Male patients often postpone going to the urologist despite the symptoms they have, due to fear of the discomfort of the examination. It is important to emphasize that it is an examination by a specialist urologist with an ultrasound examination is usually a painless and quick procedure that can prevent and solve a serious health problem.” – explained prof. Dr. Tulić.

How often to practice regular checks?

"There is no universal rule that dictates how often a patient should visit a urologist and how often to schedule follow-up examinations. What is definitely recommended is that men older than 45 years go to a urologist's examination at least once a year with a PSA test (prostate tumor marker).

Certain urological conditions and diseases require regular controls by a urologist at established time intervals, and their frequency is individual for each patient depending on the type of disease, the patient's condition and other parameters." Prof. Dr. Tulić emphasizes that some serious diseases in urology very often do not produce certain symptoms, and that is precisely why preventive examinations are even more important.

"Hydrate yourself, that means drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. Keep cholesterol at a normal level, as well as blood pressure. Avoid overloading the body with drugs, and do not overdo it with protein intake. A balanced and healthy diet, as well as physical activity, are key to the general health of the body," - points out prof. Dr. Tulić.
