Member of Parliament of the Civil Movement URA Ana Novaković Đurović said at the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of the European Union and Montenegro for Stabilization and Association (POSP) that joining the European Union is a key foreign policy interest of Montenegro, but that the Government "that violates the principles of the rule of law cannot lead the country towards the fulfillment of that goal".
"When it comes to the rule of law, which means respect for the law, the fact is that the prime minister, Mr. Spajić, grossly violated the law by appointing the acting director of the Police Directorate. Such a government cannot bring Montenegro into the EU. When there is no unified position in a government about how the security sector should look and function, it is a danger to the state, because it encourages criminal structures to act. It is very bad that after the initial results of the SDT in the fight against corruption and organized crime, the Government does not provide security and environment to continue with this fight," Novaković Đurović said.
She added that it is significant that there was an appointment in the judiciary, for which the opposition also voted, but that it is only the beginning of reforms and that for now there is only form, not substance. Only when these institutions deliver results, show impartiality and independence, she said, then one can talk about the essence of reforms.
Novaković Đurović also pointed to the loss of the control role of the Assembly, because the parliamentary majority prevents the hearing mechanisms of ministers and prime ministers on key issues.
The POSP meeting is held in Strasbourg. The topics of this year's meeting are the situation in the integration process of Montenegro towards the EU, the rule of law and media freedom.
