In the next year, NGO Eko-team will work on creating an inventory of barriers for the Gornja Zeta river basin, which represents the first step towards the removal of outdated, dysfunctional and dangerous barriers from the Zeta river and its tributaries.

"The Gornja Zeta river basin is rich in biodiversity, showing a high degree of endemism. However, the system is adversely affected by a number of small barriers built during the 1960s, which are now nearing the end of their useful lives. Systematized data on the locations and number of barriers crossing the Zeta and its tributaries do not exist," the NGO announced.

At the level of the European Union, rivers have received their own special goal through the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. One of the key elements of the strategy refers to the restoration of at least 25 km of rivers through the removal of barriers and the restoration of floodplains.

Many barriers on rivers no longer serve their purpose or are in some cases unprofitable. This refers to old barriers for the needs of ponds that are no longer in operation, partitions for flood defense, as well as all other barriers that no longer perform the function for which they were made. Also all those barriers that were built illegally.
