The service for maintenance of environmental hygiene and infrastructure of the Skadar Lake National Park (NP) during regular activities in the field today found an injured otter on the road between Vranjina and Virpazar.
This was published on the official Facebook page of the National Parks of Montenegro (NPCG).
"Thanks to the quick reaction and coordination of our services and expert assistant for the protection of mammal fauna, Belma Šestović, the otter was transferred to the veterinary clinic "Mont Vet" in order to provide it with the necessary help as soon as possible. We hope for a positive outcome of the treatment so that this young aquatic beauty will be returned to its habitat," NPCG said.
They appeal to drivers to slow down on the part of the road between Vranjina and Virpazar where otters often cross from one part of the lake to another.
"The otter is a species protected by law. It has the status of NT (Near Threatened) and the population trend is decreasing compared to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is on the list of the Habitats Directive, the list of the Bern and Bonn Conventions. It is protected in Montenegro according to the Decision on placing certain plant and animal species under protection (Official Gazette of the Republic of Croatia No. 76/06)", said the NPCG.
