The footbridge over the sand dunes in the back of the bathing area on the Velika beach in Ulcinj, as well as the approach to it from the direction of the pine forest, are not safe for passers-by, even though the season is on the threshold and despite the announcements of the Public Enterprise for the Management of Marine Assets (JP) that the narrow, elevated track, to be repaired on time.
The footbridge is completely buried in sand in one part, while the floor has collapsed in several places in the central part, which poses a danger, especially for children. The access road, which is used by the tenants of the swimming pool, is in an even worse condition.
Instead of a symbol and trademark of the swimming pool, the catwalk has become a path to avoid.
JP financed the construction of footbridges in the hinterland of several bathing areas, in order to protect the vegetation of the sand dunes, i.e. characteristic plants that have the rare property of surviving in extreme conditions. The narrow paths, with a couple of benches for rest, quickly won the hearts of the users of the bathing area, because they ensured the protection of the fenced dunes and areas and unimpeded passage to the beaches and the sea.
In response to the questions of "Vijesti" when the footbridge and fences that protect the sand dunes and indigenous plants in the hinterland of some bathing areas on Velika plaža will be repaired, the Service for Planning and Construction of the JP in October 2022 reminded that a little earlier it had announced a public call for "Performance of works on dune fencing and rehabilitation of the existing fence on the Velika beach".
In accordance with the legal procedures, the response continued, the contractor was selected and the contract for the performance of the works was signed at the end of August of that year. The deadline for the execution of the contract was one year, that is, August last year.
At the time, JP announced that before that, through the international "Welcome" project for the protection of sand dunes on the Velika beach, they had rehabilitated the damaged dune in the hinterland of the aforementioned bathing area.
"Through these works, a wooden fence with a length of 550 meters was installed, which prevented further endangerment of the dune in that area. A 20-meter-long wooden footbridge was built in order to trace a path for the users of the swimming pool and thus give a positive example of the use of space. For the first time, through these works, the dune was rehabilitated by mechanical sanding and planting of vegetation that is characteristic of the dune area. Representatives of the Faculty of Biology from Podgorica were hired for this job," the JP letter said.
The area of Velika plaža has been placed under protection, according to the provisions of the Law on Nature Protection, by the decision on the protection of nature objects. The halophytic vegetation that inhabits the sand dunes of Velika Ulcinj beach is considered a special ecological value of this area and was the subject of attention of many botanists.
In addition to the aforementioned bathing area, footbridges were also built at the neighboring ones.
