Civilians who did not pose any danger died in Kaluđerski laz, it was announced at the commemoration on the occasion of marking a quarter of a century since the crime in that Rožaj village.
The Civic Alliance (GA) announced that this year it joined the commemoration and organized the laying of flowers in Novi Selo, as well as the formation of the Network of Activists Dealing with War Crimes in Montenegro.
At the commemoration in Kaluđerski laz, lawyer Velija Murić warned that there was no will to investigate war crimes in the 1990s. He said that civilians died in Kaluđerski Laz who do not pose any danger and added: "We have war criminals who are walking around freely and celebrating these events in bars. Until now, not even the Kosovo prosecutor's office has taken any effective action to prosecute this crime to the end."
President of Rožaje Municipality Rahman Husović said that refugees from Kosovo sought refuge in Rožaje and died there. "We hope that after 25 years, the new VDT will launch an initiative to shed light on this crime. A commemorative plaque will be erected at this place, and the Municipality of Rožaje will help in every way," said Husović, as announced by the Civic Alliance.
The organizers thanked the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, for supporting the initiative to erect the memorial.
The former head of the Security Center in Rožaje, Šemso Dedeić, called on the authorities to shed light on the crime. "These hills and people do not forget crimes. They killed innocent people who were running away from the war. It was a crime committed by volunteers of the Podgorica Corps, and the army knows the rules of warfare. They have no right to kill civilians," said Dedeić.
After the commemoration, representatives of the Civic Alliance visited Novo Selo, where they laid flowers at the place where the remains of some of the victims of the crime in Kaluđerski laz are found.
"The activity that gave the crime in Kaluđerski laz a new voice in the fight for justice that the victims and their families deserve was the holding of a meeting at which the Network of Activists Dealing with War Crimes Committed in Montenegro was formed, which is made up of recognized activists for human rights and transition justice, as well as family members of victims of war crimes," said the Civic Alliance.
