We in Nikšić have a special obligation to warn local authorities about the intolerable and catastrophic communal and ecological situation in the city, said the municipal committee of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Nikšić.

"On the streets of Nikšić, there are constantly containers full of garbage, wild landfills spring up at every turn, city neighborhoods are covered with garbage, and along the roads and streets the picture that welcomes every traveler is, to say the least, disappointing," they said in a statement.

They pointed out that today is Earth Day, which, they said, should remind people around the world about the importance of preserving the environment and ecosystems.

"Riverbeds have been turned into garbage dumps, and those in power are doing everything to make life as unbearable as possible for our citizens, so they want to build a center for the processing of animal by-products in a populated place, as well as a landfill for construction waste. Without vision, without knowledge, and worst of all, without empathy and responsibilities for citizens, as well as generations to come, the local government rushes and leads our city to ruin," they added.

The DPS stated that when measuring air pollution, Nikšić takes a high 2nd or 3rd place in Montenegro.

"We are in possession of information that there are almost 4 tons of hazardous waste in "Zeljezara", which, as you can imagine, is stored in jute bags. We call on the competent state authorities and inspections to take immediate action in order to move the mentioned waste and to those who, as a result of their illegal actions, endanger the health of citizens, were sanctioned, and possibly held criminally responsible for what was (not) done," they said.

They told the citizens that Nikšić does not deserve this state of affairs.

"And least of all, he deserves this kind of government. No, after every night, dawn breaks, even here, too," they concluded.
