The law on legal recognition of gender identity on the basis of self-determination protects and enhances the civil and secular character of the state, it was assessed at a meeting of deputies of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) with representatives of LGBTQ+ organizations.

DPS announced that the members of their caucus Aleksandra Vuković-Kuč, Aleksandra Despotović, Drita Llolla, Sonja Milatović and Zoja Bojanić-Lalović spoke with representatives of LGBTQ+ organizations operating in Montenegro.

It is stated that Balša Dragojević attended the meeting in front of the Montenegrin LGBTIQ Association Kvir Montenegro, while Jovan Džoli Ulićević, Iskra Đurišić and Aleksa Radonjić attended the meeting in front of the Spektra Association.

It is emphasized that the DPS MPs supported the Law on legal recognition of gender identity based on self-determination, which will soon be on the agenda of the Assembly.

"This law is ours, as much as yours, because it protects and enhances the civil and secular character of the state," said Vuković-Kuč.

Ulićević, as stated, emphasized that, in addition to realizing the human rights of the beneficiaries of this law, this is precisely the consequence of its adoption.

"This law also has a symbolic role. On the one hand, it destroys the prejudice that gender equality is exclusively a women's issue, but the adoption of this law also represents resistance to paramilitary right-wing structures operating in Montenegro," Ulićević believes.

It is stated that Llolla indicated the possibility of DPS being one of the leading actors in raising the awareness of the general public on this issue, with a special focus on the health system, which must provide deep support and equal access to health care for transgender people and all citizens of Montenegro.

"If the Law comes on the agenda, we will clearly and unequivocally state our views, as well as on the eve of the passing of the Law on Life Partnership of the same sex, which I consider to be a step forward in the civilization of this country," said Milatović.

At the meeting, it was assessed that not only for the European path of Montenegro, but also for the strengthening of its civil substance, the progressive parliamentary and extra-parliamentary action of political actors is crucial, especially in terms of promoting human rights and freedoms.

"DPS, in that spirit, is the only party that has officially and unanimously announced that it will support the Law on Legal Recognition of Gender Identity on the Basis of Self-Determination," the announcement concludes.
