The legendary Brazilian soccer player Romario returned to training at the age of 58, almost two decades since he ended his playing career, and it only took him a few minutes to show what he can do.
Romario, a world champion with Brazil in 1994, scored twice while training with the much younger players of Rio de Janeiro's America soccer club, of which he is president.
America will compete in the second division of the Rio de Janeiro State Championship this year. It also includes Romarinho, one of the sons of the former Barcelona star.
"My biggest goal here is to have the opportunity to play with my son. Many athletes have that goal. LeBron James wants to play with his son next season in the NBA. Rivaldo also had that chance. I want that too," Romario said. to reporters after training on Thursday.
Tired after training, Romario joked that he would soon need a stretcher.
"For a man who hasn't trained for 16 years, I managed to run a little bit. I want to make one thing absolutely clear - I won't play the whole championship. My idea is to play a few minutes in some matches. The most important thing is America," said Romario .
America will play its first league game on May 18. Romario became the president of that club in 2023, with the aim of returning it to the first league.
Romario was known not to be a fan of penalties, but he seems to have changed his mind.
"If there is a penalty, the president of the club will ask to take it. If the coach says no, he will be fired, and the president of the club will definitely take the penalty," joked Romario.
