In violence and fighting over the theft of finch cattle, 22 people died in Madagascar, around 3.000 people were displaced, and hundreds of houses were destroyed, reports AFP.
About 275 houses were razed to the ground and 3.000 people were forced to move because of the unrest that lasted for a week.
The violence is linked to widespread cattle theft, which has sparked clashes between gangs and cattle rustlers, called "dahalos", between villagers and the military.
Zebu cattle are a symbol of wealth, and are at the heart of local culture in the south of Madagascar. The meat of these cattle is eaten only at weddings and special celebrations.
In cattle wars, casualties are common. Even the army has been accused of destroying villages suspected of harboring cattle rustlers.
