Ukrainian forces are holding their positions against Russian troops in the eastern Donbass region and are making some progress in some areas, President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.
"On the whole, we are holding our positions," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address.
Zelensky also said that Ukraine, vulnerable to waves of Russian airstrikes, has strengthened its anti-aircraft capabilities and will further strengthen them in the new year to protect itself and the entire European continent.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on NATO member states to supply more weapons to Ukraine.
“I call on allies to do more. It is in our security interest to ensure that Ukraine wins and that (Vladimir) Putin does not win," Stoltenberg said in an interview with the German news agency DPA.
He said that perhaps it is even more important that Ukraine gets enough ammunition for the existing weapons systems, adding that the need for ammunition and spare parts is "huge".
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an address to a group of Western leaders, requested a wide range of weapons and air defense systems to help efforts to counter the Russian invasion, reports Al Jazeera Balkans.
The United States also last week announced nearly $XNUMX billion in additional military aid, including the Patriot air defense system, which offers protection against aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles.
Stoltenberg said that military support to Ukraine is the fastest way to peace.
"We know that most wars end at the negotiating table, probably including this one, but we know that what Ukraine can achieve in those negotiations depends on the military situation," Stoltenberg said.
