The Russian Ministry of Defense reported a surge of Ukrainian drone attacks today, targeting the regions of Moscow, Novgorod and Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, Reuters reports.
No one was injured in the attacks, but a drone targeting the Novgorod region damaged a warplane and caused a fire at a military airport.
Novgorod Oblast is located hundreds of kilometers (miles) from Russia's border with Ukraine.
"As a result of the terrorist attack on the territory of the airport, a fire broke out in the airplane parking lot, which the firefighters quickly eliminated. One aircraft was damaged," according to the Ministry's announcement.
Air defense forces were later reported to have intercepted the aircraft-like drone on the northwestern outskirts of Moscow, forcing it to crash near the Putilkovo settlement. Drone airstrikes deep in Russia have intensified in recent months.
One crashed into a building in central Moscow on Friday after Russian air defenses shot it down, disrupting air traffic at all civilian airports in the Russian capital.
Russian air defense forces also shot down a missile launched by Ukraine over the Crimean peninsula during the night, it was announced earlier.
Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, has also seen an increase in drone and rocket attacks. Ukraine does not usually comment on who is behind the attacks on Russian territory or Crimea, although officials have publicly expressed satisfaction over them.
