The Russian military has launched another wave of drone strikes against targets across Ukraine, including the capital, Ukrainian military and officials said early Sunday.
The latest attacks followed a deadly drone strike a day earlier on Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city in the east of the country and close to the border with Russia, Radio Free Europe's Ukrainian service reported.
Russia is launching new attacks as Kiev faces a potential cut in military supplies from the US as Republican lawmakers block a $61 billion aid package amid demands for deep policy changes around US border security.
Ukraine's air force said on Telegram that its air defense systems had destroyed 40 of 45 Shahid drones launched by Russia overnight, many of which reportedly targeted port infrastructure in the country's south.
"The air alert in the capital lasted for almost two hours," said the head of the Kyiv military administration, Sergei Popko, on Telegram.
Popko said that all drones over Kiev were destroyed. According to the first reports, there were no casualties or material damage in Kyiv or its surroundings.
