The Ukrainian army said it hit a training ground in occupied Kherson, where Russian troops were preparing to attack the Ukrainian bridgehead in Krinka on the left bank of the Dnieper River.

It is the second attack this week that has killed dozens of Russian soldiers.

At the same time, Kiev denied the claim of the Russian Minister of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, that Russian forces occupied the Ukrainian bridgehead near Krinka.

"There were at least three attacks on Russian troops concentrated at the training ground near Nova Kakhovka," Natalia Humenyuk, spokeswoman for the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine, told RFE/RL on February 22.

"The Russian army was preparing for an assault on Krink, which they claimed had already been conquered... According to preliminary data, the commanders of the Dnieper group of Russian forces were also there. The information is still being verified," Humenyuk added.

In a separate statement to Suspilne, Humenyuk said at least 60 Russian soldiers were killed in the attack.

Russia has not commented on the attack, which was first reported by the Ukrainian Telegram channel DeepState and Russian pro-war bloggers as having resulted in heavy casualties.

A video of the alleged attack consisting of three explosions was also posted on Telegram channels.

However, the information could not be independently verified.

In a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 20, Shoigu said Krinka had been "cleansed", but the Ukrainian military said his statement was a "falsification of facts".

Ukrainian forces liberated the city of Kherson and the rest of the region on the right bank of the Dnieper in November 2022, forcing Russian troops to retreat across the river. Last year, Kiev troops managed to establish a small bridgehead on the left bank of the Dnieper, which was under constant Russian attacks.

The alleged Ukrainian attack on Russian forces in Kherson was the second in as many days in which a large number of Russian soldiers were reportedly killed.

Russia's BBC reported on February 21 that a Ukrainian attack on a training ground in Moscow-occupied Donetsk killed at least 60 Russian soldiers.

According to the report, Russian soldiers from the 36th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade were lined up and awaiting the arrival of Major General Oleg Moiseyev, commander of the Russian 29th Army, when the attack occurred on February 20.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine commented on the report.

Pro-Russian social media posted videos and photos purportedly showing dozens of dead bodies in uniform, accusing Moiseyev of forcing soldiers to stand in line awaiting his arrival when they were shot.
