Police in Poland arrested a man today for allegedly spying for the Russian military intelligence agency (GRU) and for allegedly agreeing to participate in a plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Polish prosecutor's office announced today.
A statement from the prosecutor's office said the man, identified only as Pavel K., was accused of being willing to reveal airport security information to Russian agents and was arrested in Poland on Wednesday.
The man is said to have sought contact with Russians directly involved in the war in Ukraine and was expected to pass on detailed information about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in south-eastern Poland, near the border with Ukraine, which is a major hub for international military and humanitarian deliveries. for Ukraine. It also serves leaders and politicians traveling to and from Ukraine. The airport is under the control of American troops.
If found guilty, the man could be sentenced to up to eight years in prison.
Prosecutors said the arrest was the result of close cooperation with prosecutors and Ukraine's security services, who tipped them off and provided key evidence. It is added that the investigation is still ongoing.
Since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several people have been arrested in Poland on charges of spying for Russia.
