Local authorities on the Greek island of Samos said today that one migrant died and 25 were rescued after their boat sank shortly after setting sail from Turkey.
The coast guard said that the accident happened on Sunday and that 23 people were rescued from the sinking ship, while two others were pulled from the water.
The third man, who was unconscious, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the announcement of the local authorities, it is stated that a rescue operation has been launched in cooperation with the European Border Protection Agency Frontex in order to find persons who are missing.
The police found 10 migrants on the nearby shore early this morning. They were brought in for questioning to determine if they were also in that boat.
Despite intensive patrolling by the Greek Coast Guard and Frontex in the eastern Aegean Sea, smugglers from Turkey are using the nearby Greek islands as an entry point to the European Union.
