Former House Democratic Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi said today that she will run again for her seat in Congress as California's representative in the 2024 election, dismissing speculation that she will retire.
"Our country needs to show the world that our flag is still shining. That's why I'm running again," Pelosi, 83, said via the X social network.
She said this in front of allies in the San Francisco district she has represented for more than 35 years.
Her decision was announced at a time when Republicans control the lower house of the US Congress, but with a narrow majority. Democrats believe they have a chance to regain leadership in the lower house in 2024, when President Joe Biden will run for a second term.
Pelosi's announcement puts to rest talk of her retirement, and she remains an influential leader, an important party figure and a strong fundraiser for Democrats.
The announcement also comes at a time when there are heated discussions in America about the aging of politicians, President Joe Biden is 80 years old, his rival Donald Trump is 77.
Pelosi was the Democratic Speaker of the lower house of the US Congress, and in November of last year she resigned as the leader of the Democrats in that House, stating that she wanted to make way for a new generation.
She remained in the House of Representatives as a representative of California, and although only an ordinary representative, she retained great influence in the Capitol, where she has been since 1987.
For a long time, as the president of the lower house, she was the third most important person in the American state, after the president and vice president of the country, she was elected for the first time as the president of the lower house in 2007. She is known for her role as the main opponent of Donald Trump, against whom she fiercely fought when he was the president of the country.
In late October, her husband Paul was attacked by a man with a hammer in the middle of the night in their California home. He was actually looking for her because he was accusing her of lying.
