The United States is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine that could be worth as much as $400 million, two US officials told Reuters today, the first such move in months, as Republican leaders in Congress block additional funding for Kiev.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an announcement was expected later today, Reuters reported.
One of the officials said the funding for the package came from credits returned to the Pentagon for recent purchases.
US President Joseph Biden, a Democrat, supports military aid to Ukraine against a full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022, while his likely Republican opponent in the Nov. 5 US election, former President Donald Trump, is more isolationist.
The House of Representatives is under pressure to pass a $95 billion national security package that boosts aid to Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific.
The bill was approved by the Senate on a 70-29 vote, but Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson resisted bringing the aid bill to a vote in the House of Representatives, Reuters reports.
