Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, said it has no plans to sell the popular app, after the United States Senate passed a bill that would require TikTok to be sold or banned in America.

"ByteDance has no plans to sell TikTok," the company announced on its official account on Toutiao, the social network it also owns.

Earlier this week, TikTok said it would appeal the "unconstitutional" law in court.

ByteDance's announcement comes in response to a media report that it is considering a possible sale of TikTok in the US.

"Reports in foreign media about the sale of TikTok by ByteDance are untrue," the company said.

US President Joe Biden signed a bill on Wednesday that will ban TikTok in the United States if its owner ByteDance does not sell it within a year.

Bipartisan U.S. lawmakers — as well as legal and intelligence officials — have expressed concern that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over data on more than 170 million Americans who use TikTok.

Their concerns stem from a series of Chinese national security laws - which oblige organizations to help the country collect data.

TikTok has rejected claims that it can be used as a tool of the Chinese government.

The company said it has never shared data about US users with Chinese authorities and would not do so even if asked.
