The authorities of Dubai announced today the construction of a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum Airport, which is expected to become "the largest airport in the world", and the construction value will be 34,8 billion dollars.
"We have approved the plans for a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport and the start of the implementation of the project worth about 34,85 billion dollars," wrote on the X platform the leader of Dubai and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum.
According to him, when the terminal is built, the airport will be "the largest in the world" with a capacity of 260 million passengers per year.
The official said the new airport will be five times the size of Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest in the world.
The first phase of the project will be completed within ten years and then the new airport will "receive 150 million passengers per year".
Located on the outskirts of Dubai, since 2010 Al Maktoum Airport has received a small portion of the air traffic of the wealthy Gulf emirate.
That airport should take passengers from Dubai International Airport, whose maximum capacity is 120 million passengers, and whose location in the city center prevents its expansion.
