The General Assembly of the Union of Albanian Municipalities in the region was held yesterday at the Mediteran Hotel in Ulcinj. In a statement from the office of the President of the Municipality of Ulcinj, Omer Bajraktari, it is stated that the topic of the meeting was regional tourism and challenges in service industries.
Apart from the host, the meeting was attended by presidents and representatives of Albanian municipalities from Montenegro and the region.
"At the meeting, among other things, the potential of regional tourism was discussed, where Ulcinj dominates in this sphere with a long tradition as a popular tourist destination for the region and beyond. The municipality of Ulcinj will always support regional initiatives that strengthen our ties with other cities and municipalities in the region," the announcement reads.
It is added that a significant part of Ulcinj's tourism is due to tourists coming from Kosovo.
Bajraktari congratulated the municipalities of Durrës, Haračina and Vučitrn as new members of the Union of Albanian Municipalities.
The association was founded in Tirana in 2016, on the occasion of the independence of Albania and the Day of the Albanian Flag, which, in addition to the Albanian capital, also included Ulcinj, Pristina, Tetovo and Preševo. On behalf of Ulcinj, the cooperation agreement was signed by the then President of the Municipality, Nazif Cungu.
In the meantime, several other municipalities from the region joined the union.
It was then announced that the linking of these municipalities aims to determine the mechanisms of mutual cooperation in the areas of urban planning, tourism, environment, culture, investment and innovation.
News has unofficially learned that some representatives of municipalities from North Macedonia did not attend the meeting in Ulcinj today because of the elections and from Kosovo because of the Day of Mourning.
