As an activity of the project "Supporting the flood resistance of local communities in the Skadar lake basin", which aimed to reduce flood damage, Red Cross volunteers and employees in cooperation with the Municipality of Zeta carried out a waste collection action on the Srpska gora hill, on the occasion of celebrating Earth Day country, according to the announcement of the Red Cross of Montenegro.
"Volunteers and employees of the Red Cross of Montenegro, the Municipal Organization of the Red Cross of Zeta and employees of the Municipality of Zeta and related bodies, collected scattered waste from the Srpska gora hill and left this area tidy for nature lovers, with an emphasis on preserving it. In the previous five-year period, The Red Cross of Montenegro and the Municipal Red Cross Organization of Zeta, in cooperation with the Municipality of Zeta, implemented a series of activities aimed at building flood resistance in local communities, in the Skadar lake basin," the announcement reads.
According to them, the activities included training for providing first aid, for different target groups, in order, as they said, to through spreading knowledge about disaster risk reduction with the community, improved the capacities of community members to prepare for and respond to floods and other disasters.
"In the previous period, in cooperation with the Municipality, we repaired the retaining wall to protect against the harmful effects of water in the settlement of Ponari, cleaned the 2 km long Tara stream that flows through the settlements of Bistrice, Kurilo and Bijelo Polje, built two recycling islands for the settlement Berislavci and Gostilj, which greatly contributed to the improvement of public hygiene in these communities. As part of today's activity, the municipality of Zeta was given a flyer with an overview of the available infrastructure for waste management and 150 bins for waste collection," they added.
The Red Cross pointed out that all the mentioned activities were carried out as part of the project "Supporting flood resistance of local communities in the Skadar Lake basin", and, as they said, with the financial support of the Zurich Foundation and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
