Six workers are missing after a bridge collapse in Baltimore and are presumed dead, said the CEO of the company that employed construction workers on the bridge.
Apart from them, one person is unharmed, and the other is in the hospital in a very serious condition - said Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace.
The metal bridge over the Potapsko River in the American state of Maryland, 2,6 kilometers long, almost completely collapsed when a large Singaporean cargo ship hit one of its pillars.
Vehicles that fell from the bridge on the road city bypass, primarily intended for trucks, were found using sonar, but it is not yet known how many there are in total.
Because the ship was speeding toward the bridge, authorities didn't have enough time to stop all the cars from crossing the bridge, but they did help a lot, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said. "These men are heroes," Moore said. "They saved lives last night."
Baltimore is home to one of the largest cargo ports in the US.
